Backpacker Guide // Accommodation

Are you a couple looking for romantic accommodation in Koh Tao but stuck between pricey resorts and party scene dorms ?

The beloved Koh Tao is a dreamy tropical escape that is the perfect blend of lively evenings and laid-back exploration in the daytime. Exploring the island with a partner is a true couples adventure, filled with rainforest viewpoints, delicious food options, social bars and of course the famous crystal waters and abundant marine life. But choosing where to stay in Koh Tao as a couple can be a tricky task.

As a backpacking couple looking for accommodation, it’s often hard to find an affordable option for private rooms in the best locations of Koh Tao. Don’t stress we’ve got you couples covered – here is a guide to best hostels for couples in Koh Tao.

Price Legend (per night)

£     – 1000THB or less

££   – 1000THB-1250THB

£££ – 1250THB +

Indie Hostel ££

Modern, clean, and minimalistic hostel with the best burger restaurant in Koh Tao ‘juicy burger’ directly below.

The private rooms are small and secure with their very own bathroom and a comfy bed. Hot water is luck of the draw and the bar next door can be heard into the early hours but that’s what you get if you want to be near the buzzy nightlife of Sairee Beach!

Unlike many hostels, there is a whole floor of private’s where you can bump into other traveling couples. The privates are a little pricey at £28 per night, especially for the size of the room but the hostel’s friendly vibe, rooftop terrace, and attentive staff quickly make it worth the extra few Thai Baht.

Nirvana Guesthouse and Hostel £

From a modern Hostel to a more homely one. Nirvana offers a more typical Asian guesthouse experience with a homely vibe.

Located near Mae Haad pier expect a 30-minute walk and a 5-minute bike ride to the buzzy nightlife of Sairee Beach. But for just 853THB a night (£20), you can’t really go wrong.

The Dearly Koh Tao Hostel £££

Located between Mae Haad Pier and Sharks Bay, there isn’t too much around Dearly Koh Tao. So why has it made our list well, it is one of the cleanest and friendliest hostels we’ve stayed in. The facilities are brilliant with a pool, social area, breakfast and lots of organised activities it’s a great pick for most couples.

Because of these facilities, It isn’t the cheapest at £30 per night and these rooms have a shared bathroom.

If you do come here via bike the location is just 15 minutes away from pretty much anywhere you want to go in Koh Tao.

The miracle guesthouse ££

Clean and quiet rooms located just a short walk from Mae Haad pier.

For £26 the privates have comfortable soft beds and a balcony, they are regularly cleaned and all the staff is super attentive.

Be aware that most travellers prefer to be closer to Sairee Beach than to Mae Haad Pier as this is where the main bars and nightlife action is.

Like most hotels and hostels you can book almost all your travel plans, activities, and motorbike hire through your hotel receptionist.

Warehouse Hostel £

Although there are no privates available the warehouse Hostel is a good option for a social couple looking to spend just £9 per bed. Staff put on daily activities and there are countless group tours on offer as well as a super social bar and common area with its very own climbing wall, snooker table and darts.

Modern, industrial-styled accommodation blocks are tucked away in the rainforests. Located in the centre of Koh Tao you really need a bike to stay here but if you rent one you are just a 20-minute drive to anywhere else on the island.

If you’re an adventurous couple that loves to meet other travellers this is definitely one to consider.

Moondance Magic View £££

These cliffside bungalows are an incredible accommodation option for couples looking for a quieter time immersed in Koh Tao’a nature.

You stay here for the snorkelling, nature, and spectacular ocean views, not a modern, clean, and buzzy stay. A wooden cliffside bungalow with surprisingly comfy beds, ensuite, and an all-important mosquito net is the minimal offering you get here.

You may find some geckos in the bathroom and ants on your balcony but what can you expect in such an unspoiled natural location?

On paper it may sound a bit rough around the edges but trust us waking up to the sun rising over an ocean that is just a couple metres from your balcony makes it well worth the £32 per night.

Deishaview Jungle Hostel £

A famous mountainside Hostel that is one of the best viewpoints in Koh Tao. Towering over Sairee beach, in a rainforest canopy you’ll find Deishaview Jungle Hostel for just £8 a night for a dorm bed.

Although there are no privates available there were quite a few other couples when I visited. Many of them were drawn to the Hostel for its stunning views and dawn/dusk yoga sessions.

A true secluded hilltop escape to relax in.

The only drawback is that you need to be good on a scooter to get here. Steep cliffs and tight bends are the only way up to the Hostel

Sunrise Koh Tao £

This hostel is one of the best on the beachfront nearer Mae Haad pier. This means you can be checked in 5 minutes after stepping off your ferry.

In my opinion, this location isn’t as good as the beachfront bars and buzzy streets of Sairee.

For the price, however, this is a great option – £16 a night for a standard double with a bathroom is a budget-friendly option for any travelling couple. Although air con bumps the price up to £23 per night.

Savage Hostel £

A stylish and social hostel that has one of the best atmospheres in all of Koh Tao. Located in between the beachfront bars and fishbowl nightlife this is a brilliant choice for a couple wanting to experience the social life of Koh Tao.

For £17 per night, you get a small, comfortable air-conned room, a pool, and a brilliant social area,  all directly on Sairee beach but without the thumping bass of the Main Street that goes on into the early hours.

Tao Thong Villa 1 £

Most backpacking couples don’t get to treat themselves to an ocean-view villa very often, but here’s your chance.

The Tao Thong villas are on a rainforest cliff edge directly overlooking the ocean. It is simple and rustic with minimal protection against the elements, mosquitoes, and geckos other than a trust mosquito net. But for only £22 you do get a balcony, en-suite, fan, and of course a secluded bay full of tropical fish.

Getting to and from the local towns is difficult but there is a wonderful restaurant on site which offers brilliant authentic Thai meals!

This private paradise location alone makes this an incredible place to stay and an unforgettable experience.

Budchui village 2 £

This hotel may not be the best for socialising but it’s location is perfect. Walking distance to the best bars, restaurants, and main Sairee beach but far enough away to actually get some sleep without earplugs.

For £22 per night, you get a pool that overlooks the rainforest, a simple but massive en-suite room, an A/C and a convenience shop on site too! The staff here are unbelievably friendly and give the best advice for experiencing Koh Tao.
