Welcome to Taghazout, Morocco, home of daringly poured mint tea, yogis and a surf retreat that offers unrivalled right hand point breaks that roll in as far as the eye can see.
This place is a hive of energy and the honey that drives us all, is the sweet nectar of the Atlantic Ocean. The Ocean has always been at the centre of this village, from its days as a Berber fishing village to its current reputation as a North African surfing grail.
If you are lucky enough to be visiting Taghazout here are the top 7 surf breaks you don’t want to miss out on:
Anchor Point
Wave – A lengthy righthand pointbreak
Size – From 3ft to holding 12ft+
Ability – Certified Shredders
This wave is a thing of surfing legend filling childhood dreams with the chance of a 500m ride. Once you pop up the race is on, will your legs run out of puff before the wave, most collapse before the wave does, but for those that can brave the ride and the hefty paddle to the line up the rewards are unmatched.
Killers
Wave – Righthand Point Break
Size – From 4ft – 15+
Ability – Certified Shredders
Named after the pod of killer whales that stop off for some fish tagine, Killers is one of the most consistent spots in the area. It holds swell up to producing vertical walls and hollow sections but make sure your paddle muscles are up to the task.
Devils Rock
Wave – Peaky Beach Break
Size – From 1ft – 6ft
Ability – All Abilities
Don’t stress, the names misleading. It is actually one of the more mellow spots on the Taghazout line-up and is great for beginners
Draculas
Wave – Right-hand point break
Size – From 5ft – 10ft
Ability – Certified Shredders
Unlike the last spot, Draculas is named perfectly after the sharp Dracula-like rocks that draw blood from surfers. Holding large swell and creating large right-hand A-frames this spot offers some serious sections for expert surfers.
Tamri
Wave – Beach break
Size – From 1ft – 6ft
Ability – All Abilities
Arguably the most consistent surf spot in Morocco, this beach break forms waves over shifting sandbanks producing fun waves all the way through to the summer months. Tamri is home to flamingos, camels and a rare Moroccan left-hander for you goofy footers!
Hash Point
Wave – Point break
Size – From 1ft – 6ft
Ability – All Abilities
Named after those surfers too busy vacuuming the lawn, Hashpoint is a perfect stop if you think that Anchor is looking like too far of a trek. This spot made it to our list based purely on its location rather than its performance, but it still makes for a cheeky warm-up spot or fun session in the sun so don’t rule it out!
Boilers
Wave – Reef
Size – From 4 – 15ft+
Ability – Certified Shredders
As one of the most northerly breaks in the Taghazout area the foothills of the Atlas Mountains create an almighty wind funnel that keeps this break sheltered. This mighty wind block allows swells of up to 10-foot roll in powerful and unspoiled producing large speed walls. The spot is named after a rusted sunken shipwreck located at the take-off point so only paddle out if you back yourself or face a painful Tetanus shot at Agadir General.
After visiting Taghazout you can really understand why the ocean demands respect, it offers livelihoods, food, and endless pleasure but it can also bury your face into the rocks. So, when you arrive stay safe, respect the locals, leave only footprints, and enjoy the Moroccan adventure of a lifetime.
