Babis

For the best Moussaka 

Moussaka is on the menu in every Cretan restaurant but ignore them all until you reach Babis Taverna. This Moussaka is cooked with a family secret recipe and has an equally as tasty veggie option. Passion fuels this restaurant from delicious plates to the cheerful waiting staff.

One of the most popular places to eat in town and it won’t take you long to guess the reason!

Aposperida

For the best pork chops

In a taverna surrounded by roses and mulberry trees, you will find this treasure on the outskirts of town.

The thought of these plate sized pork chops with garlic potatoes kept me drooling while writing this.

Poseidon

For the best fresh fish

My family have been visiting this old-fashioned restaurant ever since they first arrived in 1986.

Look out for their black fishing boat on the horizon, it hauls in plenty of fresh fish which is traditionally served to perfection. Top tip, ask the waiter for what they caught today and simply trust the chef.

Valentinos

For the best selection

This restaurant always has a buzz and for good reason. With a massive selection of dishes on offer and each with flavours that will have you coming back for more, you do not want to miss out.  

You must try their Chicken Schnitzel, Lamb chops and avocado salad which come fresh from the owners’ avocado trees.

Arkadi 

For the best views

Without question the most scenic restaurant in Georgioupolis, you eat less than a metre from the sea overlooking the sunset and iconic chapel. Specialising in delicious fresh fish and serving the most tender grilled octopus I have ever tried.

Now we couldn’t write an article on restaurants in Georgioupolis without mentioning these two tavernas located in nearby villages. Trust us when we say they are undoubtedly worth the trip. 

Georgia’s Taverna – Lake Kournas

For the best secret recipes

It is so cliché to say you can taste the love in someone’s cooking, but here I can begin to understand the truth behind the statement. Georgia and her family source their entire menu from their farm. Their traditional style of cooking has been passed down for generations and the warmth of their service will leave you with a wide smile and even wider stomach.

Here everything is unbelievable. My personal favourite is their stuffed lamb cabbage leaves in a light lemon sauce served with an ice-cold glass of homemade lemonade.

Parasia Taverna – Vamos

For the best lamb in Crete

 If you have one taste of traditional lamb let it be from a Parasia Fork. Visit this taverna on a night with traditional Cretan music for an evening of Raki, Pentozali (Cretan dancing) and a taste of Lamb Christo, which they slow cook in a wood oven for hours before the celebration.
