For most people, the secret islands of the Caribbean have long been revealed but the Corn Islands are still firmly off the beaten path. Located just 70 kilometers off Nicaragua’s eastern coast, Little Corn Island and Big Corn Island offer the classic Caribbean hues of gin-clear waters, white sands and emerald coconut trees.

There is incredible marine life here so the snorkelling and diving should be high on your list, but most come here to simply relax on pristine beaches, unwind in hammocks, and sip fresh coconut.

Here’s your guide to experiencing this hidden Caribbean island paradise of Nicaragua.

Getting There

This is the only negative, reaching the Corn Islands can be a bit costly and time-consuming, but trust me— once you are on that quiet beach it’s worth it. Most backpackers fly into Managua, Nicaragua’s capital, and then take a domestic flight to Big Corn Island. The flight is short, about 1.5 hours, and offers incredible views of the turquoise Caribbean waters. From Big Corn, you can hop on a panga (local boat) for a 30-minute ride to Little Corn Island, but we suggest spending a few days on each.

Big Corn Island: Laid-Back Caribbean Vibes

You guessed it Big Corn is the larger of the two islands, but don’t expect a bustling metropolis—it’s still a small, tranquil paradise with a relaxed pace of life. Here’s what to do in the day:

1. Explore the Beaches: Big Corn has a mix of sandy beaches and rocky coves. The best beaches include Long Bay, Southwest Bay, and Sally Peaches. Each one offers that quintessential Caribbean vibe— white sand, swaying palms, and crystal-clear water. Basically a guaranteed good beach vibe.

2. Rent a Scooter or Bike: One of the best ways to explore Big Corn is by scooter or bike. You can cruise around the island in an hour or so, stopping at scenic viewpoints, local eateries, and secluded beaches along the way.

3. Dive and Snorkel: The Corn Islands are a diver’s paradise. The waters around Big Corn are teeming with marine life, including colorful coral reefs, nurse sharks, and turtles. Several dive shops on the island offer trips to the best spots, whether you’re a beginner or a pro.

4. Enjoy the Local Cuisine: Don’t miss the chance to try the island’s fresh seafood. Visit the restaurants for lobster, grilled fish, or a traditional dish like rundown—a coconut-based seafood stew that’s a local specialty.

5. Island Nightlife: While Big Corn isn’t known for wild parties, you’ll find a few bars where you can sip on a cold beer or rum cocktail while listening to reggae beats. It’s all about enjoying good company and that easygoing island atmosphere.

Little Corn Island: A Slice of Unspoiled Paradise

Little Corn Island is the smaller, quieter sibling to Big Corn, and it’s often the highlight of any trip to the Corn Islands. With no cars, limited Wi-Fi, and a laid-back vibe, Little Corn feels like stepping into a different world. Here’s how to make the most of your time:

1. Beach Bumming: Little Corn’s beaches are straight out of a postcard. The most popular spots are Cocal Beach and Otto Beach. They’re the kind of places where you can spend the entire day lounging in the sun, swimming in the warm water, and losing track of time.

2. Snorkeling and Diving: Just like Big Corn, Little Corn offers incredible underwater experiences. The waters are rich with coral, tropical fish, and more adventurous dives like shark encounters. If you’re into freediving, Little Corn is also a top spot to practice.

3. Hiking Around the Island: Little Corn is small enough to hike around it in a few hours. Stroll through the jungle paths, discover hidden beaches, and make your way to the lighthouse for panoramic views of the island.

4. Yoga and Wellness: Little Corn is known for its wellness retreats, offering yoga classes and workshops in serene settings. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just want to relax, it’s the perfect place to reconnect with yourself.

When to Visit

The Corn Islands enjoy a tropical climate year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry season, from February to April and July to September. The weather is warm, the water is clear, and you’ll avoid the rainy season’s unpredictable storms. However, even during the wetter months, the islands are still worth visiting—just pack a raincoat and be ready for occasional showers.

Practical Tips

  1. Cash is King: There are only a couple of ATMs on Big Corn and none on Little Corn. Bring enough cash for your stay, as not all places accept cards.
  2. Embrace Island Time: Things move slowly here. If the ferry is late, or your food takes a while, just go with the flow—it’s all part of the experience.
  3. Respect the Environment: The islands are fragile ecosystems. Be mindful of your impact, avoid single-use plastics, and respect the local wildlife.
