About this location

Jump into the sprawling metropolis of the world’s largest urban area.

Known for

The world’s most populous city with over 13 million residents (37 million in the entire metropolitan area) Tokyo is the beating heart of urban Japan. This huge, sprawling metropolis of unique culture and attractions makes Tokyo a must-visit for travellers. Consisting of 23 districts, or ‘wards’, each with its own unique character and charm makes exploring this high-tech city exciting and worth a multi-day trip in our experience. Unlike many other cities where you’ll at times struggle to find something unique to try or see, Tokyo’s sheer size and scope makes it a fantastic city stop on your Japanese adventure for experiencing this country at its most vibrant and modern. You’ll be hard-pressed to run out of things to do!

While you’re here, be sure to visit the many beautiful parks, temples and gardens, including the world-famous Sensō-ji Temple and Meiji Shrine. When you’ve exhausted these peaceful tastes of Japanese culture and history, head back into the downtown to enjoy the huge offering of restaurants and abundant nightlife locations. Tokyo truly never sleeps, and wandering the side-streets at night, visiting small bars and restaurants is one of the most unique and memorable experiences we’ve ever had.

Tokyo is really well connected with other major cities across Japan, thanks to outstanding Japanese public transport.

We can’t wait to come back here, as we’re sure there’s still plenty more to see. Tokyo is a bustling, vibrant, and iconic city that you have to see to believe.
